3. “Feeling So Real” – Moby
(From the album Everything Is Wrong)
1995
Instinct Records had release two Moby albums by this point but since they released them both without Moby’s blessing he considered his first album for his new label Elektra, titled Everything Is Wrong, to be his first true album. For this album Moby wanted to create an album that represented all of the music he liked and that had influenced him and so Everything Is Wrong draws on a wider array of styles that included rock, industrial, ambient, dance, and electronica. Rather than making Everything Is Wrong feel unfocused and scattershot, both critics and fans embraced the eclecticism, and the album earned strong reviews that felt that Moby had made an album that was less shallow and one dimensional than most other dance and electronic albums. For the lead single, Moby released the calm, ambient instrumental piece “Hymn”, but then followed it up with the more dance-oriented “Feeling So Real”. “Feeling So Real” was both a throwback to the dancefloor hits “Go” and “Move”, but it also added in new elements helping to keep Moby at the forefront of electronic music culture. Indeed, “Feeling So Real” became another massive club and dance chart hit for Moby. The single also helped to connect Moby with the broader alternative music scene of the time to as the B-side was his cover of Joy Division’s “New Dawn Fades”, a version that was enjoyed by the surviving members of the band and that ultimately led to Moby performing it with New Order in concert.
